BDNF
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is encoded by the gene BDNF and is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors. BDNF is a secreted signaling molecule with may important functions including axonal growth, modulation of dendritic growth, the promotion of survival/differentiation of neuronal populations in peripheral and central nervous systems, regulation of synaptic transmission/plasticity and long-term potentiation. BDNF is expressed highly in brain (in the hippocampus, amygdala, cerebral cortex and cerebellum) and expressed in lung, heart and skeletal muscle. Diseases associated with this gene include Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome, Wilms Tumor, Aniridia and Mental Retardation Syndrome.
